Ladies and Gents, I have returned from my adventures in Colorado. And what adventures they were! Yow!
After a few days of worry and confusion during which my grandma was not doing too well in the hospital and there was discussion about canceling the family reunion all together, we flew to Colorado Springs, CO this past Wednesday (at crazy early o’clock).
We had been scheduled to fly US Air from Seattle to Denver to CO Springs - but at the airport, they said that US Air doesn’t fly from Seattle to Denver to CO Springs, so we would be flying united. The interesting thing with that was that when we got to Denver, we realized that because we were on United, we were on the same plane as one set of aunt, uncle and cousins. Hooray!
When we all landed in CO Springs, we were met by another set of uncle and aunt, and we all rode from the airport to the Eagle Fire hotel. I was rooming with my brother (who was hitchiking in later that day), and my cousins Jim and Matt. The hotel room was not really a room so much as it was a house - two stories, two bedrooms, a kitchen… much nicer than any of the apartments I’d been looking at in Los Angeles. Plus, as an added bonus, we were in the Duck Lodge, which meant that everything was decorated with ducks (and if you know me, you know that I’m just nuts about ducks).
The first night we went to dinner at the Swiss Chalet, a nice restaurant a few blocks away from the hotel. I had the red bell pepper soup and the glazed salmon. It was so delicious, I said ‘Yippee!’ Afterwards we went back to the hotel and visited and enjoyed the company of the extended family.
From then until Sunday was non-stop excitement. Thursday and Friday were The Days of Large Rocks, with visits to the Cave of the Winds, Pike’s Peak (via the cog train), the Garden of the Gods, and the Cliff Dwellings. On Friday, we also visited the Flying W Ranch (AKA the Flying Nazi Ranch, so-called because of the swastikas on one of the Old West buildings and the very conservative Christian nature of the Authentic Old West Cowboys) where we had a tasty old-west style BBQ. It was interesting there because dinner was in a huge room, and at the start they listed off all the large groups there - there were many groups of Boy Scouts, Air Force Academy, Focus on the Family, the American National Socialist Movement (okay, not really that one), and a family reunion group even larger than ours. The cowboy band they had was very entertaining, as well - I considered getting their CD, but opted not to.
Saturday was the day when most of the family went rafting, but my branch of the family and one of the Aunt/Uncle sets went up to Castle Rock to the Colorado Renaissance Fair - the best Renaissance Fair I’ve ever been to (even tho it was the first one I’ve been to, I assure you it was impressive). All the buildings were actual buildings, rather than tents they put up for the weekend. Unfortunately I was not in appropriate medieval garb on account of not knowing aforehand that I would be going to a place where medieval garb would be a good idea. Oh well, next time, next time…
After the fair was the dinner and talent show, where I unveiled the song ‘IM me ur <3″ for the first time in public. It went over well, but I still need to work on it before it’ll be recordable. The recording will be postponed longer because one of my guitar strings broke, and it will need to be replaced before I can work on any of the new songs.
Sunday we flew home, and today I went to work, and I am crazy tired, so now I go to sleep.
Pictures from Colorado will be coming later on. Stay tuned!
